ICC Intercontinental Cup Day 3 - Canada vs. Afghanistan

Visitors well placed to win
August 4, 2011

esuming at 21-4 over night, Canada would have hoped for a positive start to day 3 after day 2 was washed out. Unfortunately for Canada it was not to be as nightwatchman Harvir Baidwan (8) fell after a 23 run partnership with Zeeshan Siddiqui.

Siddiqui on debut seemed unperturbed by what was happening around him and continued to shine on debut reaching his half century and giving the smattering of Canadian fans around the ground.

While Siddiqui (52) and Henry Osinde (14) were still at the crease there was a chance that Canada could avoid a follow-on but as Siddiqui departed, Osinde soon followed and Canada were all out for 130.

Being asked to follow on did seem to fire up the Canadian batsmen as they came out blazing at almost 6 runs per over, however wickets continued to tumble and Canada were struggling at 52-4. A partnership between Siddiqui (23) and Zubin Surkari (35) seemed to hold off the Afghan assault but both parted in quick succession leaving Canada far adrift of making the Afghans bat again.

Hamza Tariq ensured the Afghan's would bat again as he scored his maiden first class century finally pulling Canada into the lead as he put on 81 runs with Harvir Baidwan (29*). Tariq perished just before close leaving Baidwan and Khurram Chohan with much to do tomorrow.

Hamid Hassan (7-61, and 3-24) was the pick of the Afghan bowlers and seems destined for a man of the match award tomorrow.
