CANADA vs USA - AUTY CUP | DAY 2

CANADA WIN REVIVAL MATCH
Andrew Nixon | Cricket Europe
August 16, 2011
JIMMY HANSRA NOTCHED HIS DEBUT INTERNATIONAL CENTURY.

Cricket's oldest international contest resumed this week after a 16 year gap, played like that 1995 fixture at the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club. And also like that match, Canada were again the winners, though not by as big a margin as back then - 128 runs.

To help make a result likely in the two-day match, each first innings was limited to 45 overs and each second innings to 40 overs. To ensure that it wasn't too much like a two innings limited overs match though, bowlers weren't restricted in how many overs they could bowl.

DAY 1

The USA, playing their first match over more than one-day since 2004, won the toss and elected to field first. Canada started their first innings well with a 71 opening partnership before Khushroo Wadia was bowled by Anand Tummala. His opening partner Hiral Patel stayed in to score 75.

Rustam Bhatti and Nitish Kumar were also in the runs, scoring 53 and 58 respectively. Kumar, fresh from the Under-19 World Cup Qualifier in Ireland where he scored two centuries, scored his 58 from just 45 balls, helping to take his team to 239-4 from their 45 overs.

The USA reply started badly when Akeem Dodson was out with the score on just one. Things soon went from bad to worse and the USA were on 24-4. USA captain Jignesh Desai top scored for them with 43 before he became the second of three wickets for Khurram Chohan. The visitors were bowled out for 166.

DAY 2

On day two, Canada's second innings saw Khushroo Wadia out with the score on three, with Usman Limbada and Nitish Kumar also going cheaply, leaving Canada on 39-3. A partnership of 93 between Hiral Patel and Canadian skipper Jimmy Hansra then recovered the innings before Patel was out for 80.

Hansra played a fine knock once Patel was out, scoring exactly 100 from 89 balls, including six sixes before he was out from the last ball of the Canadian innings, his team having scored 231-6, setting the USA a formidable target of 305 in their 40 overs.

Remarkably, given their performance in the Twenty20 tournament that preceded this match, the USA got a lot closer than many would have expected.

The opening pair of Quasen Alfred and Andy Mohammed put on 68, and number three Anand Tummala scored 63. Down the order, Jignesh Desai smashed 62 from 45 balls, but in the end the Americans were bowled out for 270, losing by 34 runs. Parth Desai, Junaid Siddiqui and Jimmy Hansra all took three wickets in the innings.

Canada will now prepare for their visit to Ireland in September where they will play an Intercontinental Cup match and two ODIs. The USA have no scheduled matches before the World Twenty20 qualifier in Dubai early next year
